Crapzilla (no pun intended)

When it comes to Mozilla these days, everyone seems to have an opinion - for a while it seemed like most have the same opinion because that's how pitchfork & torches equipped lemmings roll. The lemmings didn't even declare victory once the villain got banished because they have no use for victory; I imagine that scandals are so much more appealing. That's one side of the coin.

The other side is less vocal and more focused on casualty reports. There may be a lesson there too but I doubt it - witch hunts never seem to go out of fashion. God damn commies!

In summary: one stupid bar fight with one hospitalized; the others cooled down and went home. The bar got totally trashed.

I don't care much about football but pick any of the following for the team names and this episode smells the same: LGBT, liberal, left-liberal, whatever-liberal, Christian. And yeah, I support your right to support any team you like. Just don't come begging for my money, love and affection. I expect the same.

I have an opinion too: Mozilla should close shop and go on a long soul searching sabbatical. Then come back because their real role is important. It's just that they can't fulfill it at the moment and there's no one else to do it (so they better come back, straightened out and all).

The recent episode has nothing to do with the "why" part - it just shows how far south things went inside Mozilla and provides a good opportunity to put an end to the crap software they keep putting out for some years now and the mediocre performance Mozilla displays throughout the parts of the organization I've been exposed to:

  • designers may hate IE (there are some lemmings there too and it's so cool to do it) but at least Microsoft can write documentation and they understand that businesses need roadmaps that span years (not really/not always/not lately but go on with it, for the sake of the argument). Mozilla only has unresolved bugs with comment lists that span years. They may be "open" but it doesn't help much....
  • for anything beyond HTML & CSS, Mozilla's development, roadmaps and support are as clear as sandblasted glass.
  • the browser is OK; it hasn't been great in a long time.
  • Mozilla developers attitude towards other developers that need help is poor at best. Couple that with bad documentation and some bad architectural choices and all anyone who wants to build on their platforms gets is a mess.

I could go on but the bottom line is that Mozilla shows little respect for my time and money. The good part is that working with their stuff spells "job security" better than Cobol ever hopes to do.

Mozilla: you are a failure - with or without this or that CEO supporting this or that cause on his personal time and money. This is not about the CEO - this is about your (each and every employee) mindset. You fail in your mission to.....do you even know what you mission is anymore? Does anyone? Civil rights? Endangered species? Internet tubes? Web standards? Web? Free lolcats for everyone? Better lolcats maybe?

Stop wasting money on "I can do that too" projects - with enough money, anyone can do that. Innovate! Prove that your mission is more than just a wishlist and guideline for fundraisers.

Peace!

Update: for a different, more polished but equally sad view of Mozilla's state, Doc Searls' "Earth to Mozilla: Come Back Home" is a must read.
